报告题目Groundwater in Fractured Sedimentary Rock: Methods for Study

John A. Cherry, PhD, P.Eng., FRSC, holds geological engineering degrees from the University of Saskatchewan and the university of California, Berkeley and a PhD in geology from the University of Illinois. He currently is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Guelph, Canada, where he is Director, University Consortium for Field Focused Groundwater Research and Associate Director, G360 Institute for Groundwater Research, the largest university-based groundwater research institute in Canada. He holds the title of Distinguished Emeritus Professor, University of Waterloo, Canada, where he was based, 1971-2006, and is an Honorary Professor, University of Hong Kong. He has received many awards and honours from scientific and professional organizations in Canada, USA and UK, including the 2016 Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize.

报告摘要Sedimentary rock formations form important fresh groundwater zones in most countries and the flow in this rock is typically all or nearly in fracture networks. The understanding of this type of groundwater system has lagged because of the difficulties and cost of acquiring the essential data to study these systems. In the past two decades a team of which I am a member based at the University of Guelph in Canada lead by Dr. Beth Parker has developed and applied an effective and comprehensive approach for such studies based on many different types of data acquisition in boreholes. This approach has been applied at many contaminated aquifers in Canada, USA, Sweden, Brazil and elsewhere. This talk will describe this approach and show examples of applications in sandstone, dolostone and shale in the depth range of 10-500 m below ground surface.
